Spanish hosts are not internet savvy types so I'm not going to get any
photo updates or words from them, so relying on the odd photo that SB or
SPD might post up, and words in our 30 mins phone call!<br />
SB and
family were v excited about the festival of kings. This is another
christmas with present giving and socialisation and laughter. We had
packed a lot of English gifts for all the family members we could think
of, and some general foods for those that we might not as a 'family
gift' . We also got a jolly 'xmas' theme t-shirt for SPD's dad.
Apparently he liked it a lot! SB got some gifts in return that she was v
happy with, and also they have a lucky dip type thing for all the
cousins, leaving her with a vibrating banana!!<br />
the procession was excellent, and SB put a few photos of that up for us to see.<br />

<br />
On
the Friday, following a bit of a kerfuffle with getting all the
documentation required for the Spanish school, she started there. So
there is a first day at school photo! Life should settle down a bit now,
as there have been lots of late nights and late starts.<br />

plane. she had a set of new luggage for an xmas present to set her up
nicely. all of the flight and travel went v straightforwardsly. there
was a little bit of a crisis over picking up the hire car, but it was
all sorted out, and the drove to burgos, where she will be stating
during the exchange. We had thought we might just do a
one way hosting. However, having met SPD and her mother, SB thought
that it would work out, and was very excited and happy to be going.<br />

when
they got there, they went straight out for a meal with SPD and mum, and
then wandered around the city a little bit, viewing the sights and
getting a feel for where SB will be staying.<br />

SB
hasnt lived in a city since she was 4, and we are pretty rural. So will
be quite different living in an appartment quite different! the evening
was spent chilling in the appartment. The enxt day they went to a
museum of evolution with SPD's dad, and with quite a bit on humans. i
would have loved it! DH and SB did, and DH was quite tickled by seeing
SPD mooched in museums as much with her parents!<br />

She has
become one of the family. we love her company, her laughing, her passion
for awful chick flicks and will miss all that. the craziness between
her and BB - mostly laughter and shrieking, but occassionally this boils
over! SB will miss her company and friendship. It has been a really
lovely exchange :) . We did have some trepidation, due to a number of
wider not-on-the-blog life things, but we neednt have been worried.
Thankyou SPD for being a lovely daughter.<br />
So, the last week :( .
This is going to be a long blog! I took a weeks leave as well to spend
altogether. we started out with with a day of home ed. SPD wanted to
finish her history project book, which she very nearly did. I printed
off loads of photos for her to stick in, though I am not sure she will,
as she would need to do this at home. SB really needs to get stuck into
exam work for her iGCSE as well. We did the classic 'home educators at
the kitchen table'<br />

It
was SPD's last judo and ballet lessons. I think that she enjoyed judo
most, but certainly she has lunged into our life and given these things a
good shot. I didn't get any photos of them at ballet lessons or judo,
as there were no open sessions whilst SPD was here, but I did make them
pose for a judoka shot at home :)<br />

Oh
tuesday was a lovely day as we went on a jaunt to London :) . SPD
wanted to go to the science museum, so that was our first place to go.
We meandered all round the first floor and then the flight floor [so we
could see grandad's air traffic controls] . Favourite bits were
different for everyone. I think I like the age of steam best! We had
planned to eat at a lebanese restaurant for lunch, but for some crazy
reason SPD decided to become a fruitarian for the last week. [this
really wasnt well thought out!] so a bit of a kerfuffle later, and we

we
then made our way to the next doors natural history museum, ostensibly
to have a photo taken by dippy, as SPD has one of her dad there too.
However, we got sucked in by the earth sciences, and SB shew SPD all the
sections that would be useful for geog igcse, and then wished she had
visited before hers! BB really loved it, but then her ankles and legs
started to be really painful. i think its because she is growing, but if
she walks or runs much at the moment she gets really painful ankles and
legs :( , so in the end we whizzed to the main hall and sat and waited
for the others whilst i gave her a painkiller.<br />

we
had thought we would do a night twirl on the London Eye, but
unfortunately it started to rain heavily. So, instead we went to a
really lovely Italian restaurant, and persuaded SPD that she needed some
protein in her diet, and eggs were in - so it became OK to have an
omelette - phew. we were all pretty tired by then!<br />

it
was a very busy week, being SPD's last! on wednesday we had a weds4ed.
always lovely. we were investigating the alkali metals. we started off
with v small bits of sodium, but it is quite variable when it reacts. we
did it fairly safely. proved the gas was hydrogen. great fun! V happy
that Merry could join us with her youngest 2 as well, as nice to have
such a houseful. SB did an art group, B did maths, K did shakespeare. E
did bells, which we really enjoyed too.<br />

we
kept E overrnight as well, so the girls made a film night of it and
watched v silly chick flicks :) [SPD loves silly chick flicks]. This was
because we had arranged a goodbye SPD/bonfire night party :) . SPD
certainly has been well loved by our family and within our circle of
friends. So all those that could started arriving in the afternoon to
evening. the kids all laughed, joked, played games whilst waiting for it
to get dark enough for fireworks. Although there was a light drizzle,
the fireworks were still fab and much enjoyed, and the guy burnt well
too :) . then we all had a warming pot luck dinner. Much happiness all
round.<br />

the
following day SB and SpD went on a final shopping trip to get bits and
pieces for her friends. She finished off sewing the bags to put her
gifts in, and I made loads of tablet [scottish fudge] for her to give as
gifts as well. I also made most of her Kentwell bodice so that will fit
nicely. I am going to add the wool layer, DH will do the eyelet, and
then SPD will make and attach the skirt so that she can come to Kentwell
next year. The wool and bodice is her Xmas pressie from us :)<br />

arrived her mum asked whether it would be a problem if she had nearer 4
months, and clearly it isnt. so we said fine :) and what a happy choice
that is as we are loving having her live with us as she is a really
lovely person with a great laugh. This, though, is her penultimate week
with us. Time seems to have gone so quickly!<br />
So this week SB was at
cadets camp until Saturday, and didn't want SpD to get all lonely, so
invited her friend E to come and stay on Monday and Tuesday and to visit
a Halloween themed eveing thing on the Monday evening with deependers H
and TB older kids - so quite a group. Apparently it was initially v
scarey, but the ideas started repeating, so got less so. it is the first
year they have run it, so it might get scarier in the future!<br />

it was good to chat with NE when she came to pick E up as well :) the 2
girls had lots of giggling and watching real rubbish on the tv!<br />
weds my mum and dad brought up my niece and nephew to stay for the rest
of their half term :) I love having a houseful! as M is in his gcse
year, we devoted mornings to homework and afternoons to craft, baking
and just messing about :) . we had a lot of fun!<br />

we also played board games, particularly with Mum and Dad<br />

on the saturday, dad had a real desire for a steam train ride, so i
looked around, found one that was only about an hour a way, and loaded
everyone into the car - thank goodness for the galaxy as we all fitted!
obvs dad worried about my driving, what was my speed blah blah, and
telling me which lanes i would need to be in - do love him, i have lived
here for 10 years! [we are v alike] and we got there way early! I was a
little disheartened when i got there to see that things seem to have
got grubby and unloved looking, and mum and i were worried that dad was
disappointed. we were even more worried when they said that the steam
train was limping in, and we might need to have a diesel! luckilly they
were wrong. and once we got onto the train, the day got brighter, and
all was well :) the kids loved being in a 'harry potter carriage' i had
sweets and bought drinks :) lovely. lunch at the cafe also lovely with
the sun shining. phew!<br />

this is a really long blog post. i am tempted to divide it up.
unfortunately OCD dictates that since I have done all the previous weeks
'as one' I need to do this one like that as well. we are nearly there!
just halloween to go :)<br />
So when we got back from the train trip, SB
was there back from cadet camp and utterly exhausted! we got ready to go
out trick or treating in the village [well, treating!] and so the girls
all got costumed. M has decided he is too old really, and I think if
SpD hadnt been here, SB wouldnt have gone either. However, we went
round, and were really impressed with some of the village displays. the
kids got buckets of sweets and the weather was good :) . on our return,
DH had dinner ready and made a spooky dining room :)<br />
<a data-mce-href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/83014812@N00/22740802071/" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/83014812@N00/22740802071/" rel="" title="halloween 2015 176"><img alt="halloween 2015 176" data-mce-src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5632/22740802071_529f1759f9_n.jpg" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5632/22740802071_529f1759f9_n.jpg" height="214" title="halloween 2015 176" width="320" /></a><a data-mce-href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/83014812@N00/22703516516/" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/83014812@N00/22703516516/" rel="" title="halloween 2015 167"></a><a data-mce-href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/83014812@N00/22108415933/" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/83014812@N00/22108415933/" rel="" title="halloween 2015 208"><img alt="halloween 2015 208" data-mce-src="http://farm1.staticflickr.com/609/22108415933_b1b3abd887_m.jpg" src="http://farm1.staticflickr.com/609/22108415933_b1b3abd887_m.jpg" height="240" title="halloween 2015 208" width="160" /></a><a data-mce-href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/83014812@N00/22703523376/" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/83014812@N00/22703523376/" rel="" title="halloween 2015 209"><img alt="halloween 2015 209" data-mce-src="http://farm1.staticflickr.com/762/22703523376_6fb6c56af4_m.jpg" src="http://farm1.staticflickr.com/762/22703523376_6fb6c56af4_m.jpg" height="160" title="halloween 2015 209" width="240" /></a><br />
the big 3 then stayed up and watched scary films in the playroom [we
could hear constant shreiking!] whilst we watched something less scary
with the younger 2!<br />
i did an all american diner brekkie the
following morning - help yourself to pancakes with various toppings,
sauted potatoes [from the leftover jackets] baked beans, veggie sausage
and a spinach fritata. very yummy indeed! a bit of games playing, and
then mum and dad took the kids home. A lovely half term :)HelenHaricothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11272384373030929713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4383100334029772151.post-26099330299518711822015-11-08T06:16:00.003-08:002015-11-08T06:57:32.908-08:00England - week 14 [London, sleepover]a more book focussed week, as we needed it TBH! so lots of focus on
learning in a more traditional style. SB also went to arts award for her
silver. I am a bit concerned at how overextended she is! She has
planned as her challenge to pass her grade 1 oboe this term, and it is a
challenge! however, I am definitely proud of her for getting it going.<br />
I think this monday was the one that SpD snuck into a <a data-mce-href="http://www.inatthedeepend.org/2015/10/19/parliament/" href="http://www.inatthedeepend.org/2015/10/19/parliament/">houses of parliament trip with the deependers</a>
because J had been unwell. She really enjoyed it, and said that she had
learnt a lot, and came back with some information. I am hoping that the
deependers might have a picture too, if I am lucky!<br />
Weds was a
weds4ed day, with our usual group and the addition of TB schooled kids
again as their half term, plus their previous en famille daughters, so
very international flavour! I love a good crowd :) . so for science we
were moving on with our acid base stuff. this time we were identifiying
which transitional metal was in a salt by adding sodium hydroxide to a
solution of it. v cool [I love science experiments] as we had iron 2+,
iron 3+, copper, magnesium and calcium so we got some colourful
preciptates :)<br />

this time SB's silver arts award lesson was watercolours of turtles,
getting the turtliness of them :) some very different interpretations of
the brief in the group, and lots of really lovely pices of art at the
end.<br />

SO,
we then did some crazy pass the parcel game, which made people laugh
lots. unfortunately it had been hanging around a bit, so they couldnt
eat the sweeties in the layers. however, good laugh :) . as well as the
shakespeare lapbooks, which are coming along really well, and got my
girls watching shaekspear dvd - midsummer nights dream BB's fav, mine
still much ado about nothing, did like the tempest with helen mirren,
but it is a more difficult play to grasp, particularly if english is not
your first language. hmm, i digressed, well, aws well as the lapbooks
and the maths, this time they did some bells as well, which sounded

the weekend SB went off to cadets camp, and although she took a few
selfies, i need to ask her what I can put on here! The rest of went to
visit friends and had a fab time. SpD went shopping with all the big
girls, BB swam and played with her friend R, and DH and I played lots of
board games. perfick :)<br />

homeed doesnt seem to look like that any more! just busy busy busy.
Monday was a pretty normal worky day, with the older girls having ballet
and judo in the evening. Tuesday BB had a bronze arts award meeting.
the other girls did some more work. She has got her folder all lined up
and organised. just needs to decide what to do with the first section to
write up, on an artist.<br />
Weds we went into London as SpD wanted to
visit the London Globe Theatre. she was a bit reluctant to wake up tho,
so by the time we had made it in, all the tours had finished :( so we
looked at the outside and went into the museum. we saw a demonstration
on tudor clothes, so my tudor pedant children ran a sotto voce critique.
:D :D<br />

afterwards
we walked across the millenium bridge and topped up our food from the m
and s by st pauls [it is excellent for topping up food, plenty of
choices] and had lunch there. SB had decided not to bring her coat, not her best decision!!<br />

when
it started to rain we scooted to the museum of london, where the older 2
were being silly for a bit [they are teen girls who really get on with each other, so sometimes go overly teen on me!], so i went round with BB, for whom it is now
an ideal museum. she read and thought about pretty much all the
exhibits on the upper floor. she was getting tired, so we whipped
through the lower floor more quickly to have a drink at the cafe and
wait for the others to catch up :) . The big 2 concentrated more I think on the georgians onwards. I havent been to this nuseum for years, possibly since i was a child! it was really good, we should have gone before! It is set out really well for reviewing history in chronological order with a mixture of artifacts, information and interaction that seemed very well judged for BB's age, and still interesting for the bigger girls and me.<br />

afterwards
we went to covent garden, where bb was devastated to find her
favourite cap shop shut. she perked up with a rugby bobble hat and we ate
out at pizza express. This was a relief, as we had had such a lovely day together that I didnt want it to end on a sad note. The big girls are v understanding of BB most of the time. the pizzas were delish :)<br />

SPD has improved greatly in English, and is definitely a part of our family!<br />
Monday
was monthly rollerskating homeed meet and all 3 girls really enjoy
this. fair bit of gossip with other homeeducating families and a chance
to whizz around on roller skates. I have borrowed a blurry photo from a
friend as DH never took any! All 3 girls really enjoy rollerskating and
meeting up with a wider dispersed home ed group.<br />

tues
was a do some work day! SpD is working mostly on English and her
history journal, and SB on her gcse subjects. BB is trying to achieve 5
home ed things a day as her challenge this month. so far so good! just
at the beginning :)<br />
weds was a weds4ed day :) we were especially
lucky to have 2 ex HE friends join us as their school was closed for the
day :) BB was particularly happy about R being there as she has missed
her since she started secondary school this year. Chemistry is moving on
apace, and this was pretty fun as we were doing acids and metal order
of reactivity. We had magnesium, tin, zinc, copper, iron and lead. we
did a fair bit of talking about the properties of acids and how they

SB
did aboriginal animal art as the clas she is doing for her silver arts
award with the group. she has a theme of animals. They are supposed
to do some writing between sessions and havent, so will need to
encourage that. lovely day for art in the conservatory, and some great
art pieces for the folders.<br />

There

great day altogether :) finished with some games playing<br />

It
was definitely an out week as all 3 went to sizewell B to learn more
about nuclear reactors and nuclear power. No photos within the building
[clearly] but all came back to tell me different things that they had
learnt. clearly sb and one of her friends had been in a silly mood, as
they had also been working out how to attack the base in mission
impossible mode. sigh! BB, however, could tell me lots of sensible
things!<br />
on the saturday we divided! SB and I went to a reenactors
market to choose wool for SpD. she enjoyed Kentwell so much that she
wants to come back next year but was really worried about how she was
going to get the right wool etc. So, we agreed that she would get the
wool from us as birthday/xmas present and made her v happy :) . thanks
to some kentwellies advising, we have some nice blue wool. Also enjoyed
mooching around the stalls and bought something with a steampunk flavour
for bb. If I was younger I would def do the steampunk thing :)<br />
Meanwhile
SpD was on a shopping expedition with friends, well one in the end, as
the other couldnt make it. they had a fab time with lots of giggling,
and i downloaded one of the many selfie shots they took ;)<br />

The
final out thing was that SB auditioned for the county windband on the
sunday. she really enjoyed it :) and she got in! woot woot.HelenHaricothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11272384373030929713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4383100334029772151.post-64881967755881853862015-11-08T06:10:00.000-08:002015-11-08T06:52:47.873-08:00a quick bit about the educationSpD is mostly working on English, both directly with a coursebook aimed at igcse english as a second language, with
numerous EFL grammar worksheets from the internet and through a history project tudors, now victorians, but dont think we will get to georgians!<br />
We are
clearly doing much less bookwork than normal for this age, as actually it is
conversation that is the most important, so we are also playing games,
going to places and talking about it, encouraging reading of good books [ and picking out new words for us to explain]
and watching good programmes [she rather likes Jane Austen, but
Shakespeare is a bit dense].<br />
When kids come out of school in England, it
is common to find they need a period of deschooling - ie doing
relatively nothing - to find their flow and self direction, and this was
clearly something noticeably needed for SpD as she is used to being directed. However, she didnt have the luxury
of all the time she might have had in a 6 month exchange so we upped the nagging somewhat and reached a compromise position. In the end she has concentrated on english and english through history rather than science or maths [tho both available and offered] and if we had known she was doing exactly the same geog course at school that SB did for her igcse geog last year, I would have made more of a push for her to carry on with that. Science experiments were done with the group.<br />
SpD's English has really substantially improved since being here, even though she had lots of English from doing some lessons in English back in Spain. The flow, correct use of different tenses, so that she wasn't just being understood, but using the language correctly. We have had lots of laughter about crazy pronunciation, weird verbs, and sentence structure along the way.<br />
Other skills she has learnt - to sew, having never done it before, to bake [ditto] and lots more crafting and games playing. She has also continued with Judo and Ballet.<br />

weds. By Train! SB has already done this journey once before, so we were
reasonably certain that they would make it up there! they had a lovely
time by all accounts, did some horse riding, went girl shopping and came
home safely as well :) If SB took any photos I might nab them to put on
the blog!<br />
<br />
SO The big 2 missed our extra weds4ed at TB's. we went
there for a change. they have an added attraction of a swimming pool for
all the kids to pile into :)<br />
<br />
At
the weekend we had a fantastic time! we went to a family wedding and
then danced the night away :) SB was v happy with the superdry dress
nanna had bought her, and BB was v sharp in a suite. SPD had a tartan
jacket that clearly suited her. It has been a while since we went to a
wedding, and it was fun.<br />

unfortunately a rainy day for them. They came back happy, bubbly and
exhausted! they clearly had a fab time. And thankyou to izzy for lending
her caravan for them, as they were v happy with that.<br />
Tuesday SB
had her first silver arts award meeting. they need to do a challenge,
and apparently hers will be to take grade 1 oboe, this term!!!
considering we are starting october, and the exam can be from a months
time, and she has never played the instrument before, i am not convinced
this is a good idea! also, I think the oboe itself might need a fix.
argh!!! I'm not sure how she is going to fit all these things in!<br />
I
had pulled a 24 hour work shift on tuesday, so had thought i might
spend wednesday snoozing, but that didnt happen! instead i got the girls
all chivvyed in home ed, and they all did a good day of work. we also
played a game, and BB and SPD did some more sliding on the slip and
slide :) . BB finished making a halfpipe for her fingerskateboard.
NannyF also came round after her hospital appointment. so quite a lovely
day :)<br />

thurs
and fri were more home ed days, making sure that SpD is getting to
grips with English well. She has nearly finished her tudor history
journal, and the dancers art journal is coming along. She isnt so keen
on the IGCSE english as a second language, as this is a bit harder for
her. however, dh and i do some with her to keep going!<br />
At the
weekend we went off to telford to do some victorian living history. I
talked a lot about industrial revolution, and ironbridge being
considered a 'birthplace' . We had a bit of trouble with our hotel -
days inn - and really wouldnt recommend it! However, finally in a room
where all the beds at least worked even if the sheets werent spotless!<br />
Our
first day was spent at blist hill victorian town. we all really enjoyed
it. lots of discussion [ok, sometimes i was monologuing ;) ] and seeing
what was there, and how it was done. treated all the girls to old
fashioned sweets near the beginning and ice cream at the end [ i think i
have sussed this parenting lark!] bb fascinated by wood carver, who
told her there was lots of money in it, so she should keep going :)<br />

we
went shopping afterwards and bought bb a wedding suit and then went for
a meal at nando's. this wasnt straightforwards, as bb had been
expecting to go home. however, we did eat a meal out so pushing the
boundaries!<br />
sunday and we gave Spd the choice of the acton scott
farm, or tar tunnel and china museum. she chose the latter. we liked the
tar tunnel. we had tried to go there once before and been foiled [waves
at the old manor borns!], so it was nice to get to go down the whole
length. there was still tar in it! I do like photos of the kids with
hard hats!<br />

we had a pleasant walk back along the canal, though noticed there has been an invasion by himalayan balsam<br />

i
loved the coalport museum. there was a little bit on the actual china
and design, and i loved the mixed cups display. but for me, the best bit
was wandering around the semi deserted works. there was a lady making
coalport flowers, which reminded me of little nanny, because she had
coalport flowers. i loved the kiln display. well worth a visit.<br />

we
walked into ironbridge - it was very hot! had icecreams, posed on the
bridge and then walked on to the museum. the big girls were all museumed
out, but bb had her second wind and read and talked about everything :)
. she was pleased to find the boat 'spry' in there as a model, as we
had seen it at blist hill and it had really captured her fancy them :) .
what a great weekend break. i am so lucky with my family to be able to
share the sunlight and time with them.<br />

from SB on her gcse subjects, and SpD on her english. she is really
liking the printed worksheets for EFL and going well on her history and
art journals. She has to work a bit harder with the igcse book on
english, which is no bad thing. I did have a grump at them both midweek
though, as I think they can get more out of their days! BB has done
less, as from weds onwards she has had a lurgy aka manflu ;) and only
been capable of sleeping or putering. TBH, she clearly hasnt felt very
well. DH has it now...<br />
Monday was also rollerskating at a home ed
meet up. DH says the older girls mostly chat :) . lovely for them to
meet up with friends. Ballet in the evening and then judo, so quite a
busy sportive day. Tuesday was less sociable! SB had a clarinet lesson,
and the rest was home ed. SpD had her 2monthiversary<br />
<a data-mce-href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/83014812@N00/20817452964/" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/83014812@N00/20817452964/" rel="" title="IMG_20150915_153745776"><img alt="IMG_20150915_153745776" data-mce-src="http://farm1.staticflickr.com/605/20817452964_d39f7a631e_m.jpg" src="http://farm1.staticflickr.com/605/20817452964_d39f7a631e_m.jpg" height="240" title="IMG_20150915_153745776" width="135" /></a><br />
Weds
was a weds4ed day. chemistry had some hard facts to get in - oxidation
and reduction - and we demonstrated this with an experiment. copper
sulphate and then magnesium, iron, zinc and lead. great :) . SB also
carried on with her arts award teaching. she has bought everyone folders
and this time they were doing owls with oil pastels. K carried on with
the shakespeare lapbooks, and B did maths. so very productive! plenty of
time to gossip and chat too.<br />

Thursday
was multisports and friday a bit of shopping , as well as the normal
home ed type work. BB was ill all these days :( . and then this weekend
the big girls have gone off to kentwell on their own. the weather is
lovely, and I am a bit jealous! this lovely photo of SpD has been taken
by them as part of their advertising.<br />

I have made sparkly new star charts for all the girls.<br />
Sb's is mostly gcse work. She hopes to take <b>chemistry</b> [CIE igcse], <b>maths</b> [edexcel a gcse] and <b>English</b> [CIE igcse] this year with either <b>Spanish</b> [edexcel igcse] or <b>physics</b>
[CIE igcse] ( she wants to do both!) but also some music, silver arts
award and other fun bits and pieces. This would give her 8 or 9 GCSE
equivalents in total, as she hopes to do a photography btec the
following year, plus additional maths [or whatever it is called these
days!] and maybe psychology gcse. She really needs to put her head down
though if she hopes to do well next summer!<br />
Spd and I had a long
talk about learning expectations, and part of learning being reviewing
and making sense of facts and being able to process answers. So she has <b>igcse English as second language</b> book, <b>efl worksheets</b>, a <b>reading list</b> for direct English work and a <b>history project</b> and <b>art project</b> and a <b>science</b> book for the indirect/ functional English. Art, games and exercise also in there!<br />
<a data-mce-href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/83014812@N00/21442939826/" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/83014812@N00/21442939826/" rel="" title="IMG_20150916_171428"><img alt="IMG_20150916_171428" data-mce-src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5670/21442939826_e809c62790_m.jpg" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5670/21442939826_e809c62790_m.jpg" height="240" title="IMG_20150916_171428" width="180" /></a><br />
Bb has a change in that she was greeting hung up at only doing things
with me and wanting things she could do on her own. So some new books/
worksheets but also more reading/ fact things. I think she is less
comfortable at chapter reading than I thought, so when her bookcase is
set up I can organise things for her to find.<br />

On Thursday the girls went to an open gallery day and watched a
glassblower at work. Ballet and judo have started for the older 2. Bb is
having a break from groups.<br />

This weekend my parents came to visit . Always lovely . On sat we
travelled to the haddenam steam rally . This fits well with spd history
project on Victorians , mum got to see the steam engines she missed out
on on holiday and it was a great day. There was a steam carousel for the
girls and mum to go on as part of a small funfair. Bb loved the
trampoline and the big two loved the dodgems.<br />

Sunday was more relaxed with game playing, saying in the pool and enjoying the last warmth of summer!<br />

preparing for our summer party. This year somewhat later and more a bit
back to school party!<br /> I do need to get the gis reenergised to work
tho! Sb is finding it hard to get out of post exam slump mode. Spd
thinks it is the school holiday still, and bb is independent!<br /> A good
weds4ed helps tho :) and it was good to have a full house with both E
and C there. Sb hadn't prepped art, so must do that next time. Chemistry
was exothermic and endothermic reactions and all about the bonds. We
did one experiment of each K did a lovely start to Shakespeare lap
books. Must make sure any homework done! Lots of games playing and happy
kids!<br />

So the weekend was a party with friends staying over. Lots of love and
laughter! We have a great group of friends that were met first online
through newsgroups and lists well before social media developed! Always
lovely to see and spend time with them and marvel at how gorgeous our
children ate and how they surprise us!<br />

around Kentwell and general chat. I think she was still not prepared for
the experience! Being a first person reenactor is quite different to
anything else! She was with me on the dyers station and did some fire
making, collecting dyestuffs and untangling and skeining wool. She did a
lot of playing with little master w who is adorable :) she particularly
liked the freedom to roam and be with other teens.<br />

SB
was a sottler this time, and she really enjoyed it. later in the week
she ended up taking responsibility for the station, learnt how to skin a
rabbit! and produced some lovely food for people.<br />
<img alt="kentwell 2015" data-mce-src="http://farm1.staticflickr.com/773/20575162753_31828dd560_m.jpg" src="http://farm1.staticflickr.com/773/20575162753_31828dd560_m.jpg" height="240" title="kentwell 2015" width="161" /><img alt="Kentwell 2025" data-mce-src="http://farm1.staticflickr.com/590/20447365783_15f32b8610_m.jpg" src="http://farm1.staticflickr.com/590/20447365783_15f32b8610_m.jpg" height="240" title="Kentwell 2025" width="180" /><br />
BB
was with me on the dyers, and started to whittle a spoon. i think long
term being on the coppice would be good for her. She also enjoyed
helping out on the builders, and was generally very useful. a great
breakthrough, in that she will now eat pottage!<br />

<br />
<br />rather fun things at kentwell - always the company!
also the ceilidh! and i did enjoy the celebration picnic, and all doing
a lineup. i got the wrong end of the stick about the disco and thought
it was for kids! whereas it was a dress up school disco and looked a lot
of fun!<br />

the weather was atrocious tho...HelenHaricothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11272384373030929713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4383100334029772151.post-78074186739485873032015-09-13T15:56:00.004-07:002015-09-13T15:56:51.786-07:00England Week 5Having had such a quiet week in week 3, this was an extrovert week!
SpD is a delightful, friendly, laughing sister for SB and they have a
great time together. Although she does a lot of smiling and laughing
with BB, they dont play together so much, tho do a bit of chasing and
laughing, so i need to encourage that a bit more.<br />
Monday and
Tuesday were pretty much focussed on hospital appointments for DH mum,
and getting her better. She had had an infection which was holding her
back. SpD has decided not to go to air cadets any more. Instead she will
go to Judo, and give ballet a try.<br />
Weds was a fun weds4ed. for
the science component we are working through the chem igcse syllabus and
doing appropriate experiments. This one was on electrolysis, which was
fun. A bonus was electroplating things with copper :) . I didnt take
many photos though unfortunately. Fairly sure some baking went on as
well! definitely some games and some playing in the pool.<br />

Friday
the girls were all lucky enough to have a go at zorbing. no photos
unfortunately as in a public swimming pool. they all had a great time,
though they only got a small time in the balls each. Always good to try
something different! The deependers were there too, which always makes
things more fun!<br />
on saturday, the much better nanna finally went
home and we packed up and went to Kentwell to re-enact again, and give
SpD her first opportunity! On the sunday, SpD, BB and I went for a look
around.<br />

DH mum had a routine operation
on the monday and came to stay with us on the Tuesday to recuperate. So
it was a quieter worky week around that. SpD is having a go at igcse
english as a second language, and it is making her think quite hard. She
doesnt really want to do much of the other books i have found her
though at the moment! When September comes, I will have another
encouragement to do more!<br />
We have also played lots of games and
done some painting, including some lovely thankyou cards for my parents!
Also made sure that SpD had a full kit of clothes ready for Kentwell :)<br />
Friday they did all go out and went and met up with some other home educated kids and all went swimming.<br />
At
the weekend I was working, and in work nearly all the time. I did find
time to make lots and lots of scones though! we made plain, cheese and
fruit. and had a cream tea as well :) .<br />
<br />

unpaid leave to spend more time with my family and we went to suffolk
coast. I have never been to Southwold before, and loved it!<br />
Before
we went, somewhat crazilly we went to have a sleep over at a friends in
the opposite direction so that we could be there at the start of her
party! the girls rampaged aorund with friends, the teens chatting and
watching teen films. We oldies played games :) and I have a new
favourite game.<br />

Have put it on the christmas list! it was lovely to see the pies as well as TB and family :)<br />
the
next day, as people were arriving we went home, picked up DH and drove
to the cottage in suffolk. It was really nice arriving, meeting up with
my parents and nephew and niece. More so because my mum had had an ealry
morning visit to a and e. luckilly only pain killers required!<br />
We
had a minimal screens time there, so that we played lots of games when
in the cottage, there was also a pool in the complex, so a fair bit of
pool playing as well! M had his birthday there, so cake, candles,
balloons and silliness :)<br />

Obviously, one of our first excursions was to SOuthwold beach, and we
went a number of times after that. I loved the beach, even if partly
stones, because there was enough sand, I love there being a prom and a
pier, and icecreams :) and the kids enjoyed making sandcastles and
playing swingball. dad also enjoyed swingball. The water was pretty warm
[for Britain] so even I went swimming :) . oh, and one day the girls
enjoyed mooching around a market too.<br />

That is probably too many photos! I should reduce them somewhat!!<br />
There are plenty of other things to enjoy seeing in suffolk, not just
the beach, tho we were lucky with the weather! We are also lucky that
our Spanish daughter is so lovely. She got on very well with all the new
family members, and my niece E has her as her new best friend :) :) We
went to Framlingham castle. I love the walk around the top, it has a
small museum it for some learning, can do some education ;) and also
then have a nice lunch at a local pub garden. All a win! Mum wasnt up
for the climb up windy stairs unfortunately, but the rest of us did and
enjoyed it. Dad had all the kids listening to him as they went around
the somewhat bijou museum of 'old stuff' on one of the floors. At the
pub, all v happy with the foold. Kids particularly happy with some
swinging chairs, and want us to have some in the garden. Hmmm! On the
way home we went in the soutwold maize maze. v expensive so only the
kids went in, but they had fun, and then loved bouncing on the air

Our
trip to minsmere wasnt entirely succesfful. nephew M was feeling 'teen'
, BB didn't want to go, and dad was a bit lonish feeling. Even an
icecream at the start didnt manage to perk everyone up. Dad went around
on his own, mum turned back with M after the first hide. SB went around
on her own to take photos, and BB had a melt halfway round. hmmm! but
after that it all went rather well, and SpD, E, BB, DH and I had a good
last half of a walk :)<br />

We had a particularly lovely time at <a data-mce-href="http://www.aviationmuseum.net/" href="http://www.aviationmuseum.net/">flixton air museum</a>,
which i would really recommend. It is in the definite pile them high
boutique museum style that I love. SB and dad wandered off immediately,
and he told her lots of stories from his early time in aviation. BB and M
also ran off to see the interactive bits, and SpD and E looked at the
things to buy and then wandered around with me. It wasnt really either
of their idea of fun. However, the day was balanced with a shopping trip
- so each had something! Did I say that I really loved the museum?<br />

SO fab a holiday, loved every minute of it, and we had a great time :)HelenHaricothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11272384373030929713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4383100334029772151.post-63358228347015698502015-09-13T15:39:00.000-07:002015-09-13T15:39:01.467-07:00England Week 2 - camping in CromerWe started the week with a camping trip to Cromer. The weather was
pretty blustery and Friday night there was quite a gale that flattened a
number of other tents. We had to reassure SpD that our tent was pretty
sturdy. It did leak tho!<br />
The next day was mostly sunny. We went to the nearby felbrigg hall and looked round and then played games at the tent.<br />
The following day we went into cromer and walked along daring the sea to the pier and back again. It was a great weekend.<br />

Monday
was a pretty quiet day with some home Ed work for SB and bb and
predominantly English for SpD. Tuesday saw the girls go into the city
and SB have her bronze arts award moderated and passed. First air cadets
that night for SpD who enjoyed it - phew as SB does a lot of air
cadets!<br />

Weds
was another weds4ed and chem was balancing equations and turning
magnesium into magnesium oxide, which was quite fun. SB superheated her
crucible so it cracked!. Nice doing 'proper'chem!<br />
Sb started on
the group tuition for her silver art award. She took a cat and made it
cubist. I loved the results :) the big kids then went all crazy in the
pool... Luckilly we have a fire pit to warm up around!<br />

Thursday i was off examining, but the girls had a chiled teen meet up
including AA and C. They had a great time. Playing games, splashing in
the pool and enjoying being together.<br /> Friday they didnt manage to go
swimming with the fishes. However in the evening we raced off for a
games night and sleepover with B and other friends which was fab :) did
have a family crisis with mu hurting her back so lots of texts and
phonecalls. All ok though :) we left at lunchtime as loads of friends
arrived to party, but we had a holiday to go too!HelenHaricothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11272384373030929713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4383100334029772151.post-45532484337482509532015-09-13T15:38:00.000-07:002015-09-13T15:38:00.561-07:00England Week 1 - the exchange begins<img alt="Jpeg" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-9421" data-mce-src="http://petitsharicots.org.uk/weblog/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/IMG_20150717_175220-600x450.jpg" height="450" src="http://petitsharicots.org.uk/weblog/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/IMG_20150717_175220-600x450.jpg" width="600" /> <img alt="Jpeg" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-9422" data-mce-src="http://petitsharicots.org.uk/weblog/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/IMG_20150718_132820-600x450.jpg" height="450" src="http://petitsharicots.org.uk/weblog/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/IMG_20150718_132820-600x450.jpg" width="600" /> <img alt="Jpeg" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-9424" data-mce-src="http://petitsharicots.org.uk/weblog/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/IMG_20150718_132306-600x450.jpg" height="450" src="http://petitsharicots.org.uk/weblog/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/IMG_20150718_132306-600x450.jpg" width="600" />no<img alt="FB_IMG_1437075252295" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-9420" data-mce-src="http://petitsharicots.org.uk/weblog/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/FB_IMG_1437075252295-600x450.jpg" height="450" src="http://petitsharicots.org.uk/weblog/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/FB_IMG_1437075252295-600x450.jpg" width="600" />Oh
my goodness! We are in progress in our second en famille exchange! Our
first one was with frb in france in 2013-2014 and we are now hosting a
Spanish daughter SpD. It all happened rather suddenly so no forewarning
blog posts! We are hosting first and looking forward to the journey
again :) currently it isn't definite that SB is going back as there are a
number of other things outside of our control. She would like to! Last
Wednesday we had a weds4ed with friends whilst Chris went to pick up SpD
and her mother. We looked atChemistry periodic table, atomic structure
and ionic bonds. Using fruit :) when SpD arrived with her mum we all
made cranes and decorated gingerbread biscuits. <img alt="Jpeg" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-9418" data-mce-src="http://petitsharicots.org.uk/weblog/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/IMG_20150715_164953-600x450.jpg" height="450" src="http://petitsharicots.org.uk/weblog/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/IMG_20150715_164953-600x450.jpg" width="600" /><img alt="Jpeg" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-9417" data-mce-src="http://petitsharicots.org.uk/weblog/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/IMG_20150715_175343-600x450.jpg" height="450" src="http://petitsharicots.org.uk/weblog/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/IMG_20150715_175343-600x450.jpg" width="600" />
We had a relaxed evening, got to know SpD and her mother, who seemed
very lovely and SB and Bb both were relaxed in her company. The next day
she went home and all the family went on a trip to the zoo. I think
they had a good time :) and on Friday the big girls went shopping with
some of SB's friends and her boyfriend. Unfortunately SpD didn't find
any trainers but did buy some other girly things.<br />
Saturday we went
out for the day. We are planning to do a history project on Victorians
forwards. So we went for a Victorian day t English heritage. It was a
lovely day to mooch around the house and have apicnic<br />
These pictures are all over the place! Need the laptop to sort them out!<br />
The
rest of the week we have baked together, cooked dinner, watched harry

We <a href="http://lesharicotsetlesserpentsenfamille.blogspot.co.uk/" target="_blank">blogged </a>a record of it. We thought that was it at the end, the next 6 months were about preparing for GCSE [she got an A* for the French btw] and some family crises to move through. We were very surprised when our daughter felt she would like to consider a shorter en famille visit to Spain and did a very careful submission, as at the age of 14 [year 10 equivalent even though we home educate] there are so many more things to consider. However, we looked at what i think as the 10 tips for an en famille exchange and thought we could commit to 3 months each way<br />
<br />
<b>My 10 top tips:</b><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: blue;"><br /></span></span>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: blue;"><b>1.</b> en famille have a lot of experience in this, so their advice
is likely to be right, even if you might have done it slightly
differently!<br />
<br />
<b>2</b>. shower your exchange child with love and affection [including
physical hugs for physical children] - they need to know they are part
of your family and not a guest! This offsets when you have to reprimand -
just as with the kids you have had all their life. The love and
affection we gave FrB was reflected back, and made the exchange so much
more wonderful, and a joy to do. [tho she always hated being told off!]<br />
<br />
<b>3.</b> your rules apply, you might need to be a bit more explicit
though than usual in how you ask. I realised that I usually make
suggestions, that my children know means there is an expectation. I
needed to be very clearly instructing with FrB -' would you like to
empty the dishwasher' in my head is an instruction, in hers it gave the
option of no! By the end of the exchange she was starting to understand
that in the uk, many grown ups would ask her in a way that though she
could think there was an option, they were expecting compliance! equal
chores too!<br />
<br />
<b>4.</b> yep, you will need to spend money - you can't do the 'just 6
months' mentality - so if you have boogie boards or scooters or bikes
etc for your 2 current kids, and are going to use them, then you need
another one - begged, borrowed, bought. 3 ds consoles [reconditioned,
ebay etc] etc, 3 equally valued children. Also all 3 busy at clubs and
groups, all 3 having new clothes as needed. While they are with you,
they are yours. They are young, and they will measure value in equality
terms. Get your wider family to buy into this too. Our parents were very
good at giving the same presents for xmas and birthday, and the same
money presents for holidays etc. FrB was noticeably appreciative of
this.<br />
<br />
<b>5.</b> think what you would really like to achieve for your exchange
child and focus on achieving that. your own child should be having that
focus on their international bit of the exchange. Honestly, you really
want to give this your best shot. It isn't about getting something good
for your child - that is definately going to happen, it is about
beginning well a long term relationship with another child and another
family. [see our planning for FrB post]<br />
<br />
<b>6.</b> pre-discuss kids money with the exchange parents if you are
planning on giving your child some to take. It was quite difficult that
FrB came with an amount of money our kids don't ever see. We managed
this - mostly! En famille recommend only a minimal amount to go out to
be potentially towards gifts. As hosts, you are expected to give each
child the same money if you do pocket money, holiday money etc. [so one
having loads more does rock the boat]<br />
<br />
<b>7.</b> take photos. ideally send some weekly to your exchange
parents. It will make a big difference to lots of them :) . [emails from
smartphones are easy] A blog, or a shared photo online album - think
flickr - also can make the world of difference to parents missing their
children. I missed SB like a hole through my heart, and I think regular
photos with or without words would have made a big difference. I know
not all families are so photo mad, but even if you are not, try the
regular photo update! You will be grateful when you are left behind!<br />
<br />
<b>8.</b> discuss with exchange parents what things your child really
wants to continue - these should be minimal and not a huge financial
drain! your child will hopefully do the clubs and groups of her
exchange sister. So for us, SB continued clarinet in france, and FrB
oboe in England. SB did theatre and climbing and scouts in France, and
FrB did judo, ballet and guides in the UK.<br />
<br />
<b>9.</b> any problems, either when your child abroad, or you have your
international child, speak to en famille early to help get this sorted!
Fabienne was very helpful when SB had severe homesickness and wondered
whether it was right for her at the beginning of the exchange. They
recommend that they do all the sorting.<br />
<br />
<b>10.</b> and, above all else, enjoy. Do this with love and enthusiasm.</span></span></blockquote>
<br />
However, life has a way of getting even more complicated, so when we had been given a match, which seemed lovely, it seemed that SB wouldnt be able to go, due to family reasons mostly, but other things too. We spent a weekend looking long and hard at what was fair and what we thought we could achieve with all the pressures, and decided we could host, even if we couldnt commit to the full exchange.<br />
<br />
2 weeks later, and our Spanish daughter arrived!! Sometimes no preplanning is a good thing!HelenHaricothttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11272384373030929713noreply@blogger.com0
